150 Residents Speak Out About River Road Widening

The council meeting of Tuesday, May 25th generated an audience of over 150 residents, most of whom attended to discuss the proposed changes in the alignment of River Road. Captain Ivone of the Piscataway police department and Fire Commissioner Paul Snyder expressed the same views of the all democratic mayor and governing body in their presentation of the proposed widening of several intersections on historic River Road, stressing the need for improved fire signalization.

The majority of those in attendance agreed that safety measures are paramount considerations. However, River Road neighbors disagreed with the mayor and council's plan to widen any portion of the historic roadway, a plan which also includes installing sidewalks in selected areas of the roadway. They reminded the governing body that a final engineering plan has not been made public, nor any substantive proof offered to support the notion that fewer accidents would occur on the roadway should these "improvements" take place.  The focus, it was stated, should be on the completion of the Rt #18 extension  which is designed to eliminate truck traffic and generally reduce the flow of vehicles on River Road .  It could then be determined what, if any changes are needed to improve safety measures.

Following the meeting area residents commented that it is simply asphalt looking for more reason to cover the landscape.
