Letter To Mayor Wahler

Dear Mayor Wahler:

On September 15, 2004, David D'Amiano pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges involving an attempt to extort campaign donations from the owners of the Halper Farm in Piscataway in return for millions of additional dollars in county and state funds to purchase the family farm.

As you are aware, on page 12 of the federal indictment against Mr. D'Amiano, State Official #1, now identified as Governor James McGreevey, suggests that one of the owners of the Halper Farm speak to "a certain Piscataway Township official" and reach out to County Official #1, who has been identified as your father-in-law, Freeholder Director David Crabiel.  Thus far, this "certain Piscataway Township official" remains the only person referenced in the indictment yet to be identified.

In a few short weeks, the people of Piscataway will be choosing who will lead them for the next four years.  They have a right to know whether or not their leaders are upholding the public trust. For that reason, I am asking you to disclose if you are the local Piscataway official referenced in the indictment or if you have any direct knowledge of the identity of this township official.

Honesty is the keystone of public trust.  I'm sure that you will agree that the people of Piscataway must be able to judge your record in its entirety.  This requires that you fully disclose your knowledge and involvement in this important matter.

I eagerly await your response.

Very truly yours,

Helen Merolla
