Republican Statement On The Rutgers University Housing Construction Plan

The construction of up to 700 townhouses at Rutgers University in Piscataway is an “absurd” idea that has all the earmarks of another back room political deal hatched by the Township Democrats and their developer friends.

The fact that Mayor Brian Wahler has apparently endorsed this project without it even being discussed in public is a disturbing sign that another insider deal is at work. Some developer is apparently going to make a fortune on this project, while the people of Piscataway suffer from another ill conceived building project.

The Merolla Team is opposed to this mammoth project because it will destroy needed open space and contribute to the town’s over development and school crowding problems created under the Wahler Administration.

We call on our state legislators to work with us to put pressure on the state university to kill this unwise project.

Democrats Call Signs "Blatantly False"

Republicans in Piscataway have chosen a red-and-white color scheme for their municipal campaign lawn signs this year. But it's their message that has local Democrats seeing red. "Bribery. Corruption. Indictment. Had enough???" the lawn signs read, accompanied by a graphic of a brush sweeping away dust.

Letter To Mayor Wahler

Dear Mayor Wahler:

On September 15, 2004, David D'Amiano pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges involving an attempt to extort campaign donations from the owners of the Halper Farm in Piscataway in return for millions of additional dollars in county and state funds to purchase the family farm.

As you are aware, on page 12 of the federal indictment against Mr. D'Amiano, State Official #1, now identified as Governor James McGreevey, suggests that one of the owners of the Halper Farm speak to "a certain Piscataway Township official" and reach out to County Official #1, who has been identified as your father-in-law, Freeholder Director David Crabiel.  Thus far, this "certain Piscataway Township official" remains the only person referenced in the indictment yet to be identified.

In a few short weeks, the people of Piscataway will be choosing who will lead them for the next four years.  They have a right to know whether or not their leaders are upholding the public trust. For that reason, I am asking you to disclose if you are the local Piscataway official referenced in the indictment or if you have any direct knowledge of the identity of this township official.

Honesty is the keystone of public trust.  I'm sure that you will agree that the people of Piscataway must be able to judge your record in its entirety.  This requires that you fully disclose your knowledge and involvement in this important matter.

I eagerly await your response.

Very truly yours,

Helen Merolla
