Piscataway Board Of Eduction - Special Election Information
For several reasons that are beyond its control, the Board of Education will ask residents for an additional $14.6 million to complete a districtwide expansion and renovation program that was originally approved by voters in March 2002. The special election will be held on Tuesday, January 25.
The Board believes that this January 2005 referendum is necessary in order to provide students with adequate educational facilities and meet current educational requirements, and to give Piscataway voters a choice whether to complete the building improvements they originally envisioned for their children, explained Paul A. Herman, president of the Board of Education. If residents approve the follow-up referendum, the tax impact on the average home assessed at $109,000 would be $55.23 per year, or $4.60 per month, at current lending rates. The additional funds will connect the Anthony and Patton Buildings at Piscataway High School; and provide for the construction of five new science laboratories, art studios, music rooms, and a 1,200-seat theatre; and upgrades to existing science laboratories and air conditioning. Piscataway High School was built to accommodate 1,700 students, 2,200 are now enrolled. Next year, 2,300 students will be enrolled.
