Guest Column: Piscataway Political Payback

Piscataway is a city that's the fifth oldest city in New Jersey. Piscataway is a city that I grew up in. Piscataway is a city that Lynley Kozinski, our East Coast Editor, grew up and currently resides in. Piscataway is a city that prides itself on the cultural diversity within the community. Piscataway has a city leader that has made a faulty move.

Brian Wahler, the current mayor of the city, proclaimed that Republicans were "girlie-men" when the GOP enlisted the help of the ACLU in a political free speech case. The case stems from last November when the Republicans put up a sign that said "Bribery, corruption, indictment. Had enough?" The Democrats in Piscataway sued the GOP, but Republicans were represented by the famous liberal group. The Piscataway Republicans won their case because they did not violate the First Amendment, as the Democrats believe.

As a former lifelong resident of Piscataway, I can remember being taught about cultural diversity and that we should respect people's differences. It's obvious that Brian Wahler isn't paying attention. To infer that, by hiring the ACLU, that Republicans are "girlie men" is embarrassing. I disagree with the ACLU about 70% of the time, but they sometimes have a good stance that I agree with.

I've been taught that people are different; different color skin or difference life preference or different anything. Most people respect other people for who they are and what they believe. But Brian Wahler does not. Mr. Wahler lives by the stereotype that Republicans cannot ask the ACLU for help. Mr. Wahler thinks that the ACLU are in the Democrat's pockets. Mr. Wahler is living in the stone age.

Brian Wahler has said that the Democrats are the party of honesty and decency. However, stooping to the same old stereotypes make the Democrats the party of stereotyping and intolerance. Is it decent to label people? Is it decent to call people names? How is that intellectually honest?

The truth is that decency and honesty are not symbols of Brian Wahler. His possible involvement with corrupt former governor James McGreevey leads to suspicion about a land deal in Piscataway. Although no one has been charged, Republicans are trying to press Wahler for answers.

To Republicans, this situation is nothing new. If a Republican were to call a Democrat a "girlie man," he would be criticized. The Democrats would call that Republican intolerant and disrespectful. But Democrats in California did when Arnold Schwarzenegger called them "girlie men."

In California, the political "girlie men" were in control of both houses of the legislature and the governor's mansion. Now, reforms up for a vote that could radically change the golden state. This change could lead to a massive economic boom that, generations from now, could look back on as a turning point.

I'm not a fan of Arnold's movies But as a taxpayer and a resident, I approve of Arnold. I, along with my fellow CSUF Titan Republicans, endorsed Arnold for governor in 2003. I might not have met Arnold yet, but I believe he is a good person with a kind heart.

Mr. Wahler, You Are NO Arnold Schwarzenegger
