Legislators need to fix tax system for those on fixed incomes

As the November elections approach, property-tax reform in New Jersey is one of the top issues on the minds of both voters and politicians.

Of all the state's residents, however, no populace is more painfully aware of this issue than senior citizens and the disabled. Living on fixed incomes and facing ever-increasing taxes with no end in sight, these special-needs groups are finding it particularly tough to make ends meet.

During the summer, several legislative committees were established to address this issue. Residents yesterday had their say at the Legislature's Constitutional Committee open public meeting held at Rutgers University's Livingston Student Center in Piscataway.

What residents might be unaware of, though, is that the biggest part of this financial squeeze comes from school taxes, which make up the bulk of property-tax costs.

Although politicians have thus far been unable to fix this broken system, the time has long since passed to offer some form of relief to those on fixed incomes.

3 Tax Increases In The Same Year?

My Fellow Piscatawayans,

I have just returned from tonight's Township Council meeting (Sept. 5, 2006) and am sad to report that your Municipal Taxes will be going up again. Our Mayor was practically giddy in his announcement that Municipal Taxes will only be going up about 5% in the 2007 budget.

The Municipal tax was raised 11% in the 2006 budget, which was adopted last January. In addition, after taxpayers voted down the school budget, the council approved an increase slightly less than that originally proposed by the Board of Education.

In other words, if this budget is passed before the New Year, it will mark the third time in one calendar year that our council has increased our property taxes. Keep that in mind this coming election day -- and tell your friends and neighbors!
