Tax Bills Arrive, Township Plays Funny With The Numbers
I received my tax bill from "The Administrator" today. Piscataway raised municipal taxes from the current $1.04 per $100 assessed to $1.34 per $100 assessed. "The Administrator" tells me it's only a $0.27 increase. If you're reading this quickly, you probably think your taxes are going up about a quarter and some change.
But if you follow basic math, you'll see the $0.27 increase is really a 26% increase! Tell me, dear reader, did you get a 26% raise in salary this year? Or any year?
"The Administrator" placed the blame for the increase on NJ's tax appeal court, which reduced Piscataway's commercial ratables by $20M. If "The Administrator" knew this was coming, why didn't our Mayor and Council do something with the current budget to offset this deficit instead of just passing the buck to you and me?
